A Brief History of Film
This motion-based infographic is a “crash-course” style informational video on a brief history about the Lumiere Brothers and film as a whole. The goal is to take a dry subject like history and make it more entertaining and digestible through the use of charming and engaging visuals.

Stop Motion
Since this project was inspired by crash-course-style educational videos, many of the visuals were based on collage art, school supplies, as well as note-taking and doodling.

In order to preserve that tactile and hand-made appearance which is associated with these things, the chosen photos were printed and progressively crumpled little by little. After every crumple, the print was photographed and these individual photos later became the frames for a stop-motion.

Aesthetic / Color / Typography

The overall aesthetic of the project was based on the era of silent film and the entertainment industry of the early 1900’s. The Dada art movement was also a source of reference and inspired the use of collage-like imagery, such as the photograph composites and torn paper textures. The addition of film grain, film strip footage overlays, blackletter-inspired typography, and the primarily black and white color scheme is also meant to reflect this.
Image Composites

Similar to how one would glue and tape together a physical collage, many of the images were stitched together using Photoshop. Additionally, they were color adjusted to either black and white or a more washed out color to show age and they were given crinkle and grain textures to show wear, communicating that these images come from an old era.
